Chapter 15
I blacked out, but only for a few seconds, I realized. It wasnât due to any resolve or discovered strength on my part. Instead, it was all because of the dragon.
He took over.
Suddenly, I was in the back of his mind, seeing the world through him. By rights, he couldâve transformed then, and done whatever he pleased. From past experience, I wouldâve expected him to burn everything --- Feirâhr Sein and Cortez included --- then fly off to inflict more mayhem.
Instead, I felt him feeding his energy --- his very essence --- into our shared body. As that happened, I finally sensed something else flowing through it, as well. I hadnât just been hit on the head; the Feirâhr Sein had cast some sort of spell on us with that touch. A lethal one, I gathered. If not for the dragon taking over, weâd have been dead.
The entire thing took only as long as a couple of breaths, but it still felt like eternity. To my further surprise --- shock, even --- the second that he was done, he retreated, giving over control to me without a single word or taunt.
I tried to call on his power, but nothing happened. Heâd taken care of our body, but that appeared to be the limit of his cooperation. I wondered if he was at all capable of anything else at this point.
Hoping that the two Feirâhr Sein still believed me to be dead or dying, I slid my hand to my coat and Her Ladyâs gift.
Just as I grasped the hilt, I heard a hissing sound from near my right side. I knew that at least one of the pair had noticed my movement.
Out came the sword, which I wielded from what was nearly a sitting position. Not the best way to start a defense, but the one wearing Danny Rains obliged me by having a hand within range. Her Ladyâs gift sliced through the wrist like it was butter, sending the severed appendage flopping on the floor for a moment before it stilled.
The previous hiss had issued from this Feirâhr Sein, but the one it issued now made the first sound like a birdâs cheerful song by comparison. âDanny Rainsâ retreated, the eyes glaring with a combination of fury and fear.
I mightâve taken more heart from my initial strike if not for the fact that, in rising, I suddenly discovered that there were three Feirâhr Sein. Not just the one that animated Rains and the one thatâd taken Cortez despite my precautions, but a third --- possibly even larger and ominous one --- hovering not far from the rest of us. He stared at me with a dark intensity unmatched by the others, an intensity that made me feel as if my skin was about to peel off inch by inch in the most hideous way possible.
His hands formed a scythe that I swore was half again as lengthy as any Iâd seen from his kind, and sharper yet. I didnât like the advantage of reach he clearly had over me.
